As any prominent awards ceremony nears, one notices a demand for introducing additional classifications to recognize unsung work and fill the passions of fans with niche passions.
A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. The same goes for board games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of video games, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.
Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked completely during that awards season
- A different innovative game missed out that year
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored recently
- Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among the most-played games worldwide and have been for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles for the title of most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
Restating the point, these are games without proper classification at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers are working at the demanding boundary game development, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
