Delhi Awakens to Toxic Pollution Post Diwali

As Tuesday dawned residents of the world's most polluted city encountered breathing severely hazardous air that registered in the "alarming" level.

Alarming Pollution Readings

Several parts of the city showed an air quality index above 500, which represents ten times the healthy threshold recommended by the WHO.

Particular areas, concentrations of dangerous airborne particles soared to of 1,800, representing 15 to 20 times higher than acceptable limits.

Pyrotechnics Prohibition and Recent Changes

Beginning in 2020, authorities had maintained a complete ban on the distribution and bursting of fireworks during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the deadly smog that blankets the capital as winter sets in.

Nevertheless in recent months, the current regional leadership petitioned the highest court to seek a relaxation of the prohibition.

Officials advocated for allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – which have been doubted by environmental experts as being only roughly 30 percent lower impact – as a balance between "cultural practices and environment".

Judicial Decision and Implementation

Much to the frustration of medical and ecological advocates, judicial authorities agreed to the proposal, stipulating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be used during limited periods throughout the Diwali.

Throughout the festival evening, there was widespread flouting of the designated hours across the capital, with minimal regulation regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the eco-friendly type.

Numerous recording stations throughout the city recorded air quality spiking around midnight to some of the worst measurements recorded during the festival in at least three years.

International Effects

Extensive ignition of pyrotechnics during the celebrations also sparked a controversy with neighbouring Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistani Punjab province pointing to declining pollution levels in Lahore on hazardous particles originating in India following the celebrations.

Long-Standing Pollution Crisis

The dangerously high readings of air contamination in the city have remained as a serious problem for more than 15 years, with the problem gradually deteriorating.

Around celebratory seasons, the concentration of dangerous particulate matter in the air has been observed to shoot up to seventy percent above the peak levels ever recorded in the Chinese city, which was previously considered as the world's most polluted metropolis.

Various Pollution Factors

The problem in the city is attributed to a combination of different contributors including transportation pollution, airborne particles, development work, rubbish burning and pollutants from agricultural fires in nearby states of farming communities.

Throughout these areas, rural residents routinely set their fields on fire to clear them quickly, creating dangerous smog that becomes contained over the capital as cooler air descends.

Public Health and Financial Toll

Both financial and medical impact on the approximately 33 million people living in the capital region is enormous, according to multiple investigations.

This pollution results in high levels of neurological, cardiovascular and respiratory disorders, and can result in cancer.

The pollution is calculated to be accounting for approximately 10k early mortalities each year in Delhi.
