British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several entry passages providing entry to the depot... initial indications are that the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," Healey added. "Including them were numerous British personnel deployed over the festive period. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "major assault" on Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
