At Least 6 Perish in Crowd Crush at Ghanaian Armed Forces Enlistment Event
At least six individuals have lost their lives during a stampede at a military recruitment gathering held in a sports arena in Ghana.
The Wednesday's "tragic" incident appeared to have been caused by "an unexpected surge of applicants who breached security protocols and rushed into the entrances," stated a statement from Ghana's armed forces.
Twenty-two additional individuals were injured, among them 5 who remain in serious state.
A large crowd had gathered at the El-Wak sports venue, in the main city, Accra, with the hope of joining the military.
The country has a rate of joblessness among young people of about thirty-two percent, the most recent government statistics indicate, and such recruitment events typically draw large crowds and often result in chaotic scenes.
The deadline to submit applications for this event was extended by a week to accommodate additional candidates, as some had experienced difficulties in the process.
Military representative Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin said the stampede took place ahead of the planned commencement time of 06:20 GMT.
The nation's leader President John Mahama has gone to see the injured in medical care.
Order has been restored, and the recruitment exercise has since started.
